Birbal comes from Bir Bar or Vir Var which means hasir javab or quick thinker, the title given by Akbar and appointed as part of a group called the navaratnas. The folk tales of Birbal focusing on his wit are famous in the Indian sub continent. Birbal was the only Hindu to adopt Din-i Ilahi, the religion founded by Akbar.
